MIGRAINE SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT

Migraine symptoms and treatment is a hot topic now a days. To begin with migraine and its related symptoms, we can say it is a primary headache disorder characterized by cyclical headaches that noticed from moderate to severe condition. Typically headaches affect one half of the head and last from 2 to 72 hours. In particular there are many other symptoms of migraine like nausea, sensitivity to light and sound. Headache normally aggravate with head movement and usually throbbing and often one-sided. By the way one-third of patients do not have throbbing pain. That is why degree of migraine tendency varies individually.

First Phase

PRODOME OR WARNING PHASE

Second Phase

AURA

The aura of migraine includes a wide range of neurological symptoms. This stage can last from 5 to 60 minutes. As a result of Aura migraine starts “one” hour prior to headache. In particular 20% of migraine sufferers experience visual disturbance, flashing lights, non-visual sensations i.e. (numbness and pins & needles in the hands), temporary loss of half of the visual range (i.e. zigzag lines).

Third Phase

HEADACHE OR MAIN ATTACK PHASE

This phase involves head pain which can be severe, even unbearable. Many symptoms for instance; intolerance of light and noise, nausea (feeling sick), vomiting (being sick), sensitivity to movement and speech difficulties are found in migraine sufferers. Consequently it leads to headache. Particularly in this phase headache can be moderate to severe that remains up to 4-74 hours long.

Fourth Phase

POST-DROME OR RECOVERY PHASE

This is the final stage of an attack, and it can take hours or days for a ‘hangover’ type feeling to disappear. In this case tiredness, fatigue, hangover, difficult to concentrate and mood change are the main symptoms. In addition to, normally this phase remains up to 24 hours after the headache.

CAUSES

There is no known cause for migraine, although most people with it are genetically predisposed to migraine. Above all, these are the following most probable conditions that causes migraine;

Mentally and physically tiredness has the key role to the migraine development. In addition to intense emotions like anger or grief also develop the migraine. In the meantime strong winds and extreme cold or heat leads the migraine. Furthermore, Lack of appetite, irregular diet and sleep timing may cause migraine. Finally hormonal factors also take part of its evolution.

FACTS

Study shows that migraine sufferers are experiencing around 13 attacks per year but this may vary from person to person. As a result WHO has rated migraine amongst the top most disabling life-time conditions. Because It affects over 6 million people in the UK.
